It all started with some ombre jelly rolls from Moda. Sitting on the shelf, you couldn’t really appreciate the beautiful gradiation of the rainbow colors of ombre strips, so Julie came up with this simple but striking quilt design. After we hung it up in the shop, it didn’t take long for those jelly rolls to disappear!
So this is actually the second version of that quilt design. We found a gorgeous selection of ombre fabric from Klothworks, and are excited to now have yardage available at Sewn. But we are even more excited to be able to use the new ombres for strip quilt kits, now available to you.
Version #2 of the strip quilt is also a little wider and longer than the original, making it the perfect throw size for anyone- 40″ by 66″. We now have kits available that include everything you need for this quilt top in these colors, pre-cut for you, for only $24.99. If you have made many quilts before, you know that’s a great deal for a throw size top! And this one comes together just as easily and quickly as you would think. You could knock out half your Christmas list by whipping up some of these.
Just for variety among our shop samples, I chose to do dense spiral quilting on this with my walking foot. It’s not the easiest choice if you are a beginner, but it’s not as hard as you might think! This quilt also looks really stunning with simple straight line quilting or wavy line quilting.
The other fun part about making this quilt your own is choosing the binding and backing fabrics. Those decisions can make this such a versatile quilt- you could make it work for a young kid, your sweet grandma, and everyone in between. I’ll be back with another post later this week showing you what I mean with some examples.
We are also offering this quilt as a class! It will be a three part class, running Friday mornings, October 4, 11, and 18. This class is designed for beginners who have never made a quilt or even those who have done our baby quilt class and are looking for more practice. You will learn about piecing, quilting, and binding, plus all the little tips that help you along the way in quilting.
It starts this Friday, so grab your spot by calling 513-321-0600.
And if you aren’t local but are interested in these kits, just call and we will be glad to ship domestically!
