what kind of fabric will i find at sewn studio?

sewn studio regularly stocks more than 500 bolts of fabric–most are  44″/45″ wide 100% quilting-weight cotton prints.  you’ll also find voile, velveteen, corduroy, flannel, linen, woven gingham, seersucker, wool, and wool-blend felt here.  looking for solids?  we are proud to carry a large selection of  Moda’s Bella line, well known for its rich colors and smooth hand.  in addition to fabric, you’ll find a wide selection of independent designer patterns, notions, books, hand-embroidery supplies, ribbons and trims.

quilting cottons?  i’m not sure that sounds very “modern”.
don’t let the term “quilting-weight” throw you off–it’s often used to describe medium-weight, 100% cotton fabric.  and while you will find everything you need to make a quilt here (quilting classes, fabric, patterns, books, needles, batting, etc), we don’t consider ourselves a traditional “quilt shop”.  at least half of our customers are sewing adult and children’s clothing, home accessories, crafty gifts, beautiful handbags, toys and everything else under the sun.  we offer a full range of gorgeous fabric from on-trend designers like Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, Joel Dewberry, Kate Spain, and many others whose creative vision and passion for bold color and modern design has created a renaissance in the industry and inspired a new generation to take up sewing.  we like to say that sewn studio isn’t your grandma’s quilt shop, but she’s more than welcome here.  there’s no age limit on creativity!

what’s a sewing lounge?
consider us your own personal “fantasy sewing room”–a space in which to feed your creative spirit and enjoy the company of other crafty souls.  whether you are taking a class or taking advantage of open sewing time to work on your own project, you’ll have access to large work tables, sewing machines, cutting mats and tables, scissors, pins and many other tools while you’re here.  feel free to settle in a comfy chair to peruse our large selection of books.  and be sure to take advantage of “open sewing nights” when we invite our customers to bring in personal projects, have some snacks, crank up the music and enjoy time spent with others.

what kind of classes do you offer?
we have classes for everyone–even if you’ve never sewn a stitch!  our most popular class, sewing 101, guides you through the basics and in just 2-1/2 hours you’ll leave with a pillow project that you can be proud of.  we also offer courses in beginning and intermediate quilting, sewing with patterns, home dec projects, technique workshops (closures, fitting, working with knits, etc), and all sorts of other projects.  we also offer classes for kids ages 8-12.  check our class schedule (link) regularly for updates, and join our newsletter list (link) to have each month’s schedule sent directly to your inbox.

i don’t have a machine.  do i have to buy one to start?
definitely not!  we are fully equipped with six beautiful, hardworking Brother Innovis 40 & 80 machines–Project Runway editions, no less!
we selected these machines based on ease of use and similar setup to most machines on the market (so you’ll be able to transfer what you learned on our machines to just about any machine you might eventually purchase).  that being said, if you have your own machine, we encourage you to bring it in for class and get to know it better.  more than one student has carried in a brand new machine still in the box and a few hours later gone home with a completed project!

i don’t sew, but i love your fabric.  can you make something for me?
unfortunately, we don’t take custom work.  if you are interested in learning, we’d love to have you take a class or two.  if not, we might be able to point you to local businesses that take on projects.  please be aware, though, that we haven’t necessarily seen their work, and can’t ensure quality, so you’ll still need to do some investigating to make sure you like their work before signing on.

i’m looking for something specific.  do you take special orders?
yes!  please let us know your needs and we will check.  there’s a pretty good chance we’ll be able to get it for you if our suppliers stock it.
